I burned through a month of Veo credits making fifteen-second product clips for a client who only ever posted them to Reels at 9:16. Veo rendered them beautifully. In 4K. With native audio nobody heard, because the client's viewers watch on mute. That was the month I stopped treating Veo as the default and started asking a duller question first: what is this clip actually for?
Veo 3.1 is genuinely the best all-round model right now. Prompt adherence is the best I've tested, and the native audio is not a gimmick. But at roughly $0.40 per second on the standard tier it is also the most expensive way to find out your hook doesn't land. If you are iterating — and if you are making short-form, you are iterating — the price per experiment matters more than the ceiling.
So here are the alternatives I actually reach for, what each is genuinely better at, and the honest reasons you might stay on Veo anyway.
Where Veo still wins, and you should not switch
Let me get this out of the way, because most "alternatives" posts pretend the incumbent has no advantages.
Stay on Veo 3.1 if you need native audio that matches the scene. No other model does ambient sound and dialogue this well in one pass, and stitching audio afterwards costs you time that eats the savings. Stay if you need long, complex prompts to survive intact — Veo follows a five-clause prompt more faithfully than anything else I have run. And stay if the deliverable is a 16:9 brand film or a YouTube piece where the 4K matters and you are rendering a handful of finals, not a hundred tests.
What Veo is bad at is being cheap enough to be wrong with. That is the whole case for everything below.
Kling 3.0 — the one I use most
Kling is the cheapest of the serious models, around $0.10 per second of output, and it is the one I reach for by reflex for vertical social video. Human motion is its strength: people walk like people, hands mostly behave, and lip-sync holds up at the length short-form actually uses.
The trade is prompt adherence. Kling will quietly drop the fourth thing you asked for. My workaround is boring and effective — write shorter prompts, one action per clip, and generate three variants instead of one perfect one. At a tenth of Veo's per-second cost, three tries still comes in cheaper than one Veo render.

Seedance 2.0 — the commercial workhorse
Seedance sits between the two on price, roughly $0.09–$0.14 per second, and it is the model I would pick if the clip has to sell something. It handles product surfaces well — fabric, glass, packaging — without the plasticky sheen that gives most AI product video away instantly.
Two honest limits. Access and billing are messier than Google's if you are outside the main markets, and it is less forgiving than Kling when a prompt gets abstract. Runway Gen-4.5 — when the model is not the point
Runway is around $0.15 per second, so it is not the cheap option. You are not really paying for the model, though; you are paying for everything around it. Video-to-video, motion brushes, camera control, and an editing environment that means you are not exporting to another app to finish.
This is the right pick when you have footage already and need to transform it rather than invent it, or when a client wants a specific camera move rather than "something cinematic". It is the wrong pick if you just want ten hook variants by lunchtime — the control that makes it good also makes it slow. Runway pricing goes through the plans.
Wan 2.2 — the free one, with a real catch
Wan runs locally and open-source, which means the marginal cost of a render is your electricity bill. If you are testing a hundred prompt variations, nothing else comes close.
The catch is not quality, it is hardware. You need a serious GPU, and if you do not have one the "free" model costs you a cloud instance that is not free at all. The rule underneath the table: pick the cheapest model that clears the bar for the platform you are posting to. A Reel at 9:16 on a muted autoplay feed does not need 4K or native audio, and paying for both is the most common way people burn a budget without improving a single metric.
What this looks like over a month
Concretely: I now run every concept through Wan or Kling first, at three to five variants per hook, and only promote the one that survives to a Veo or Seedance final if the deliverable justifies it. Most of the time it does not — the Kling version ships.
The number that moved was not quality. It was how many ideas I could afford to be wrong about in a week, which went from about four to about thirty. Wan 2.2 is genuinely free to run if you own a capable GPU, since it is open-source and local. Most of the commercial models have free tiers, but they are watermarked or capped low enough that they are trials rather than a workflow. Do not plan a content calendar around a free tier.
