Runway is one of the few AI video tools that publishes its pricing plainly, on a page you can actually read. I still see people get caught out by it, because the plan price is not the number that decides anything. The credit allowance is, and Runway does not spell out how many seconds of video a credit buys.
So here is the translation. Below are Runway's current plans as published, what each tier works out to in finished footage, and the specific things that quietly eat credits faster than you expect.
What Runway costs
Checked against Runway's own pricing page on 4 August 2026. Unlike most tools in this category these figures are first-party, not reconstructed from comparison sites.

Two details in that table matter more than the prices. The free tier's 125 credits are one-time, not monthly — you get them once, and when they are gone the free account stops being useful for generating. And Max rolls unused credits over for one month, which no lower tier does. If your output is lumpy — a heavy week then a quiet fortnight — that rollover is worth more than the headline discount.
What a credit actually buys
Runway's video models bill per second of output, and the rate depends on which model you pick. As a working rule, a standard Gen-series video generation runs in the region of 5 credits per second, with the faster or lower-fidelity variants costing meaningfully less and the highest-quality paths costing more.
That gives you a rough conversion worth memorising:

Treat those as the optimistic case, because they assume every generation is a keeper. Mine are not. On a new concept roughly one render in three is usable, which turns Standard's twelve clips a month into about four finished ones. That is the calculation people skip, and it is why Standard disappoints anyone trying to post daily.

Where the credits go faster than you think
A few things burn budget disproportionately, and none of them are obvious from the pricing page.
- Re-rolls. Every regeneration is a full-price generation. There is no discounted retry.
- Longer durations. Billing is per second, so a 10-second clip costs twice a 5-second one — and the failure rate on long generations is higher, so you pay more per usable second at both ends.
- Upscaling and extending. These are separate billable operations on top of the original generation.
- Higher-fidelity model variants. The quality tiers within Runway differ in cost by several times, and it is easy to leave the expensive one selected.

How Runway compares on price
Against the rest of the field in 2026, Runway sits mid-pack on cost and high on control.
Veo 3 generally produces better out-of-the-box realism per credit. Seedance is cheaper per finished commercial clip and is what I reach for on short-form ads. Luma undercuts nearly everyone if short clips are acceptable. Synthesia and its alternatives are a different category entirely — avatars and scripts rather than shots.
What Runway still does better than the cheaper options is editing control: motion brush, camera control, and video-to-video passes that let you fix a clip instead of rerolling it. If you think of it as an editing suite that also generates, the price makes more sense than if you treat it purely as a text-to-video button. If you want to spend nothing at all, running an open-source model locally is now a genuine alternative.

Which plan to pick
My honest read, based on how much video you finish rather than how much you generate:
- Free — evaluation only. 125 one-time credits is about two clips. Use it to decide whether the interface suits you, not to produce anything.
- Standard ($12–15) — a few finished videos a month. Fine for occasional work, frustrating for a posting schedule.
- Pro ($28–35) — the tier most regular creators actually need. Around 45 raw clips gives you comfortable room for a failure rate.
- Max ($76–95) — worth it for the credit rollover as much as the volume, if your workload comes in bursts.
Annual billing saves 20% across the board and is the easiest money you will save here. The catch is the usual one: pay yearly only after a full month of real use, not on day one.
The short version
Runway's pricing is transparent and its credit maths is not. Standard is ~12 raw clips a month, Pro ~45, Max ~190, and your real output is whatever survives your failure rate — for me about a third. Price the tier against finished videos, not generations, and the right plan usually turns out to be one step up from the one that looked like enough.
