The morning Sora's API shut off, I had eleven clips queued and no way to render them. I'd built a whole daily pipeline on a model that no longer existed. OpenAI retired the Sora app on 26 April 2026 and the API followed on 24 September — and if you're reading this looking for a replacement, you're in the same spot I was.
Here's the short version: there is no single drop-in replacement, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. What there is instead is four models that each beat Sora at one specific thing. I'll tell you which one I run daily, what the others are for, and roughly what each costs per finished clip.
What Sora was actually good at
Worth being precise about this, because it determines what you should replace it with. Sora's edge was never raw resolution. It was prompt obedience over long durations — you could describe a fairly complicated sequence and get back something that mostly matched, without the subject drifting into a different person halfway through.
What it was bad at: text, hands, consistent characters across separate generations, and anything that needed a specific product to look like that specific product. If you were using Sora for commercial work you were already working around those gaps.
So the replacement question splits in two. If you used Sora for narrative or concept work, you want prompt adherence. If you used it for ads and product content, you want reference-image control. Those lead to different tools.
The honest limits, before the list
Every model below will fail you in the same three ways, and no amount of prompt engineering fixes them completely.
First, you will not get one usable clip per generation. My working ratio across roughly 500 renders this year is closer to one in three. Budget for that or your cost maths will be wrong by a factor of three. Second, burned-in text is still unreliable everywhere — put your captions on in post, not in the prompt. Third, character consistency across separate renders needs an explicit reference mechanism; describing the same person in words gets you a different person every time.

Veo 3.1 — the best all-round replacement
If you want the closest thing to "Sora but it still exists", this is it. Veo 3.1 handles long, compound prompts better than anything else I've tested, and it generates native audio, which Sora never did well. For narrative work, explainers and anything where the prompt describes a sequence of events, it's the one.
The catch is cost. Veo is the most expensive per second of the four, and the price difference compounds fast once you account for the one-in-three ratio. It's the right tool when a clip matters; it's the wrong tool for volume. I broke the numbers down in Veo 3 pricing.
Kling 3.0 — the cinematic one
Kling produces the most filmic motion of the group. Camera moves feel like camera moves rather than a slow zoom applied to a still. If your Sora work was mood pieces, trailers or anything where the shot itself is the point, Kling gets closest.
Where it struggles is instruction-following on busy prompts. Give it five things to happen and it will pick two. The workaround is to write shorter prompts and generate more of them — which is fine, because it sits mid-range on cost. More detail in the Kling AI guide.
Seedance 2.0 — the one I actually run daily
This is what my pipeline moved to, and I want to be clear about why, because it isn't "it's the best model". It isn't. It's that Seedance 2.0 Mini hits a specific price-per-clip that makes a daily cadence affordable.
Concretely: a 15-second 720p vertical clip on Seedance 2.0 Mini costs me 37.5 credits. I render three a day, so 112.5 credits daily, and that is a number I can run indefinitely. On Veo the same daily cadence would be several times that. It also takes reference images properly, which is what makes it usable for product and ad work rather than just concept pieces.

Wan 2.2 — the free one, with conditions
Wan 2.2 is open source and runs locally, which means the marginal cost of a clip is zero. That is a genuinely different economic model from everything above, and for anyone doing high-volume experimentation it's the obvious answer.
The conditions are real though. You need a GPU with enough VRAM, generation is slow compared to hosted models, and you own the entire setup problem. If your time is worth anything, the "free" model has a real cost — it's just paid in hours instead of credits. Worth it if you're rendering constantly, not worth it for a few clips a week. How I'd choose, in one paragraph
Pick based on how many clips you need per week, not on demo reels. Under five clips and quality matters most: Veo 3.1. Mood and motion are the product: Kling. A daily or near-daily cadence on a real budget: Seedance 2.0 Mini. Rendering constantly and you already own the GPU: Wan 2.2 locally. One last thing worth saying plainly: the model matters less than the pipeline around it.
