B-roll is the least glamorous thing an AI video generator does and the thing I use it for most. Nobody opens a generator hoping to make four seconds of a hand closing a laptop. But that four seconds is the difference between a cut that lands and a talking head that runs ninety seconds without a break, and it is exactly the shot no one has in their footage folder.
I have been filling those gaps with generated clips for about a year now, across two brands that post roughly twenty short videos a day between them. Here is what actually works, what it costs, and where generated b-roll still gives itself away.
What "AI b-roll generator" actually means
There is no product category called an AI b-roll generator. There are three different things wearing the label, and they fail in different places:
- Stock-library tools with AI search — Pexels, Storyblocks, Artgrid with a semantic search box on top. Nothing is generated; you are searching faster. Cheapest option and the least likely to look wrong, because it is real footage.
- Text-to-video generators — Seedance, Kling, Veo, Runway. You describe the shot, you get the shot. This is the only one that can produce b-roll that does not exist anywhere, which is the entire reason to use it.
- Timeline tools that auto-insert clips — the "paste a script, get a video" products. They pick b-roll for you from a library. Fast, and it shows: everyone's videos start looking like everyone else's.
For anything with a product in it, only the middle category is useful. A stock library has a thousand shots of a laptop; it has none of your laptop.
The rule that decides whether generated b-roll works
Keep it short and keep the camera moving in one direction.
Almost every generated clip that reads as fake reads that way for one of two reasons: it ran long enough for the model to lose the plot, or the camera changed its mind halfway through. Under about four seconds, with a single continuous camera move, current models are genuinely hard to catch. Past six seconds, hands start doing things hands do not do.
This is why b-roll is the best possible use of a video generator. B-roll wants to be two to four seconds. You are asking the model to do the one thing it is reliably good at, and cutting away before it can embarrass you.
The second rule is to avoid faces where you can. A hand, a texture, a fabric, a screen, a pour, a door — none of these carry the uncanny penalty a face does. When I need a person in b-roll I frame them from behind or below the eyeline.

What it costs, with real numbers
The honest answer is that b-roll can cost nothing, and most people pay for it anyway.
Our own production runs on Seedance 2.0 Mini through the Higgsfield web app, at 720p, 9:16, fifteen seconds a render. Under the Unlimited toggle those renders bill zero credits — I have watched the balance sit at 0.06 credits before and after a twenty-one render session. That is the whole b-roll budget for a day of posting: nothing.
The paid comparison, for the same job:

The number nobody quotes is the reject rate. Budget three renders per usable four-second b-roll cut. On a free tier that costs patience; on a paid tier it triples the per-second price you read on the pricing page. Prompting b-roll: shorter than you think
B-roll prompts fail from being too ambitious, not too vague. The structure that works for us is four parts and nothing else: subject, one camera move, lighting, and a physical detail the model can hold onto.
"Close-up of hands folding a knitted sweater on a wooden table, slow push in, soft morning window light, wool fibres catching the light" produces a usable clip most attempts. Add a second action — "then she picks up a cup" — and the hit rate collapses, because now there are two things to get right and a transition between them.
One more thing that matters more than it should: name the material. Wool, brushed steel, wet asphalt, linen. Materials are what the model renders convincingly, and naming one gives the clip a texture that reads as real even when the composition is generic.
Where generated b-roll still gives itself away
Six things, in the order I catch them:
- Hands doing fine work — typing, buttoning, writing. Cut before the second beat or shoot it for real.
- Text in frame — signage, labels, screens. Still unreliable at small sizes, still the fastest tell.
- Crowds — background people walk strangely. Keep the background static or empty.
- Water and liquid pours — better than a year ago, still inconsistent past three seconds.
- Continuity between clips — the same room is not the same room twice. Our notes on keeping characters consistent apply to sets as well.
- Over-saturation — generated clips run warmer and more contrasty than camera footage, so they pop out of a real-footage timeline. Grade them down before you cut them in.

A workflow that holds up
What I actually do, in order: write the edit first and mark the gaps; list the b-roll shots the edit needs, each described in one sentence; generate three attempts per shot in a batch rather than one at a time; pick per shot rather than fixing a bad one; grade everything down a notch to match the real footage; and cut each b-roll clip a beat shorter than feels comfortable.
That last one does most of the work. A generated clip that is cut short reads as a stylistic choice. The same clip held two seconds longer reads as AI.
Common questions
Is there a free AI b-roll generator?

How long should a b-roll clip be?
Two to four seconds. It is both what an edit wants and what current models can hold without drifting. Generate fifteen seconds if the tool insists, then use the best four.
Can I generate b-roll of my own product?
Yes, and it is the main reason to generate rather than search a stock library. Use an image of the product as a reference frame rather than describing it in words — a description gets you something in the right category, a reference gets you the actual item.
Does AI b-roll need to be disclosed?

Why does my generated b-roll look worse than the demos?
Usually resolution and grading rather than the model. Demo reels are 1080p or 4K, graded, and cut to two seconds. A 720p clip dropped raw into a timeline next to camera footage will always look thin — match the grade first before blaming the generator.
Is stock footage still better?
For generic shots, yes — it is cheaper, faster and real. Generation wins on exactly two things: shots involving your specific product, and shots that do not exist because the situation is invented.
