The Sora API shutdown is on September 24, 2026. On that day OpenAI removes the Videos API and every Sora 2 model from its platform, and anything still calling sora-2 or sora-2-pro stops producing video. If a product, a client workflow or a content calendar still depends on it, there are only days left to move.

I do not run Sora in production — my own clips come from Seedance 2.0 Mini — but I have migrated pipelines between video models more than once, and the painful part is never the new API. It is the prompts, the settings and the assumptions that were quietly tuned to the old model. What exactly is being shut down

OpenAI announced the deprecation on March 24, 2026. Its official deprecations page lists the removal date as September 24, 2026, and it covers:

• sora-2 and its snapshots sora-2-2025-10-06 and sora-2-2025-12-08
• sora-2-pro and its snapshot sora-2-pro-2025-10-06

The detail that matters most is in the replacement column: it is empty. There is no newer OpenAI video model to point your code at. This is not a version bump where you change a model string — it is a provider change.

The consumer Sora app closed earlier in the year, so for most creators the practical impact already happened. The API date is the one that still catches developers, agencies and SaaS tools that wrapped Sora inside their own product.

What Sora was costing

Per clip that looks cheap. Per month it is not, because nobody ships every render. Take the cadence I run on a single social account — three vertical clips a day — and a realistic one-in-three keep rate. That is 90 finished clips and roughly 270 renders a month. On sora-2 at 720p that is about $405. On sora-2-pro at 1080p it is about $2,835, for one account.

A migration checklist that does not lose a month

1. Export everything first. Download every finished render and store the prompt, seed, duration, aspect ratio and reference images next to each file. After September 24 the job history is gone.
2. Inventory where Sora is called. Search the codebase for the model names and the Videos API endpoint, including scheduled jobs and retry queues that only run occasionally.
3. Pick five reference prompts. Your best-performing clips, not your favourites. They are the benchmark every candidate model has to meet.
4. Rewrite, do not paste. Each model reads prompts differently. Sora tolerated long cinematic prose; most replacements do better with a locked scene description, a camera path and a timed action list. My structure is in the prompt guide.
5. Render each reference three times. One render tells you nothing about a model's variance. Three tells you the keep rate, and the keep rate is what sets the real price.
6. Re-check durations and resolutions. Replacements have different maximum lengths and aspect ratio options. A pipeline that assumed 12 seconds or 1024p output will break silently.
7. Swap behind a flag. Keep the old call path until the new one has shipped a week of real posts, then remove Sora before the cut-off rather than on it.

Mistakes I would avoid

Waiting for the last day. Provider queues and rate limits get busy exactly when a large user base migrates at once. Move the volume now and leave the last week for fixing edge cases.

Choosing on price per second alone. A model that is half the price but keeps one render in five costs more than one that keeps one in two.

Losing character consistency. If a recurring character was held together by Sora's reference handling, rebuild that with a proper character sheet on the new model before you move the whole calendar. The approach is in consistent AI video characters.

The Sora API disappears on September 24, 2026 and OpenAI names no successor, so this is a provider switch, not an upgrade. Export your renders and prompts today, benchmark two or three replacements on your own best prompts, judge them on cost per kept clip, and cut over behind a flag before the deadline rather than on it.
