I run a paid community, and I get most of its members from fifteen-second vertical videos. Not the lessons — the reels. That is the thing I wish someone had told me when I started trying to put AI video into a course: the place it pays off first is almost never the lesson itself. It is everything around the lesson.

So this is the practical version. Where an AI video generator genuinely saves a course creator time and money, where students notice straight away and switch off, and the workflow I would use if I were building a course from scratch this month.

The limits, first

People buy a course because of a person. They want your judgement, your shortcuts, your "don't do what I did". The moment a whole lesson is delivered by an avatar reading a script, a lot of students feel they paid for a textbook with a face on it — and completion drops.

Three other limits I hit repeatedly:

  • Text inside generated video is still unreliable. Ask a model for a slide, a chart label or a code snippet and you will get letters that look like letters until someone reads them. Put text on as an overlay afterwards — I cover how in the text overlay guide.
  • Demonstrations can't be faked. If the lesson is "here is how I edit this", the screen recording is the lesson. Generated footage of someone vaguely using a laptop teaches nothing.
  • Consistency across forty lessons is work. A recurring character or presenter has to look the same in module one and module nine. It is solvable, but it needs a locked reference — see consistent AI characters.

So the rule I work to: you teach, AI produces the packaging.

Where it actually pays off

1. Promo reels that sell the course. This is the big one. I make 15-second, 9:16 clips on Seedance 2.0 Mini at 720p, and on the paid route that is 37.5 credits a clip — cheap enough to test hooks instead of guessing. Each reel shows one idea from inside the course and ends on the community link. Most of the return comes from volume and from the first two seconds, not from polish.

2. B-roll that makes a talking-head lesson watchable. Five minutes of you on camera is fine. Five minutes with a cutaway every thirty seconds is noticeably better. Generate the concept shots you would never film — a warehouse, a trading floor, a kitchen at 6 a.m. — and cut them in over your own voice. The B-roll guide covers how I brief them.

3. Translated lessons. If your topic travels, dubbing a recorded lesson into Spanish or German with a cloned voice opens a new market for the cost of an afternoon. It is the one place I would put AI directly on the lesson — because it is still your lesson. More in the AI video translator guide.

4. Short avatar segments, not whole lessons. A 40-second module intro, a recap at the end, a "what's changed" update when a tool changes its pricing. Nobody wants to re-record a module because one screen changed; an avatar can deliver the patch. For which tool, see spokesperson generators.

The workflow I'd use for a new course

  1. Record the core lessons yourself. Camera, screen, or both. Rough is fine; this is the product.
  2. Write a 40-second intro and outro script per module and render them with an avatar or your own cloned voice over B-roll. When the module changes, you re-render forty seconds, not forty minutes.
  3. Generate three to five B-roll clips per lesson for the concepts that are hard to picture. Short, four to eight seconds, subtle camera moves.
  4. Add every piece of text as an overlay in the edit — never inside the generation.
  5. Cut ten promo reels from the finished course, each built on one idea, with a different hook. Post them over two weeks and watch which idea pulls.
  6. Translate the modules that sell once you know which ones they are.

The ratio that falls out of this: maybe a fifth of what students watch is generated, and almost all of what strangers see before they buy is.

What it costs

Three buckets, very different sizes.

Promo reels and B-roll are cheap per clip. At 37.5 credits a 15-second clip, a batch of ten reels is a few hundred credits — well inside one month of a mid-tier plan on the video tools. The per-clip maths for other models is in what an AI video actually costs.

Avatar segments are billed in minutes, and minutes go fast. The course-focused avatar tools are priced for that: Colossyan's Professional plan is $59 a month on yearly billing for 30 minutes on its standard avatar model, and it is the one to look at if your course lives in an LMS and needs SCORM export. For a course sold through a community or your own site, HeyGen or Synthesia are usually enough.

Your time is the biggest bucket and the one AI shrinks most — not by making lessons for you, but by making the re-recording, the translating and the marketing someone else's job.

Tell students what's generated

Students forgive AI packaging. What they do not forgive is finding out that the "instructor" in module four was never a person. Say it plainly in the course intro — intros and recaps are avatar-delivered, the teaching is you — and label promo reels where the platform asks. The honest summary

AI video will not make your course for you, and a course made entirely of avatars is a course students stop finishing. What it does brilliantly is the work around the teaching: the reels that bring people in, the B-roll that keeps them watching, the translations that open new markets and the quick updates that keep old modules current. Keep yourself in the lessons and let the generator handle the rest.
