Tonight I paid 24 credits for twelve blog images and then noticed something odd: I had asked for Nano Banana Pro, and the job metadata said nano_banana_2. The images were fine. But it's a good reminder of why I don't trust labels anymore, and why I care so much about which image model makes the start frame. In an image-to-video workflow the still decides almost everything: the face, the product, the light. The video model mostly just moves it.
We use two image models almost every day: Google's Nano Banana Pro and ByteDance's Seedream. This is how they actually compare in our pipeline, with the numbers we've logged, not a benchmark table copied from a launch post.
The short answer
- Nano Banana Pro when the frame has to match something real: your product, your character, your brand. It follows references better and handles complex scenes.
- Seedream when you need volume and the subject is generic: blog art, mood frames, backgrounds, test ideas. It's much cheaper, and on some plans it's free.
If you only remember one thing: pay for Nano Banana Pro on the frames that carry your product, and let Seedream do the rest.
Limits of this comparison
We use both models through Higgsfield, mostly for fashion and ad frames. I haven't tested Seedream at scale for product-faithful swaps, because we stopped sending product work to it early. So on reference fidelity I'm leaning on a smaller sample. On cost and defect rates, the numbers are ours.

The number that changed how we work is the last row. On Higgsfield's web app, Seedream 5.0 lite and Seedream 4.5 are marked Unlimited. In one unattended run we generated 21 images and the balance didn't move. The catch: that only works in the web app with the toggle on. Through the API the same model bills credits, and the toggle silently resets on every page reload. More on that in our Higgsfield Unlimited guide.
Quality: where each one breaks
Nano Banana Pro's weak spot is text inside the scene. We rendered 100 static 9:16 ads with it in one batch. About 15% needed a re-render, and the failures weren't random: nearly all of them were scenes with a text-bearing prop, like a settings panel, a comment feed or a notes page. The model fills those with legible nonsense. One frame even invented a price on a shop window we never asked for. Headlines also doubled a word at the line break ("THE THE") until we told it exactly where to break the line.
It also has a quiet resolution trap. Send it a small reference photo and ask for 4K, and it may hand back 1K. It happened to us with a 601x800 product photo: the API echoed "4k" and returned 768x1376. Upscaling the reference locally first fixed it on the next try, 3072x5504.
Seedream's weak spot is faithfulness. It's excellent at clean, attractive compositions and faces, but when you need a specific garment print, a logo or a character to stay exactly the same, it drifts more. Fine for a blog header. Not fine for a product that has to match its shop page.

Why this matters for video
In image-to-video, the video model inherits the still. It can't add detail the frame doesn't have, and it won't fix a wrong product. That's why our handmade ad pipeline swaps one thing per generation (product, then model, then clothes) with Nano Banana Pro and checks each frame before a single second of video is rendered. A bad frame caught at 2 credits is cheap. The same mistake found after the render costs the render, too.

Five rules we now follow
- Design scenes without text props. If a screen or a sign isn't essential, leave it out.
- Prescribe line breaks for any headline you do want rendered.
- Upscale small references before asking for 4K.
- Look at every frame on a contact sheet before rendering video. A green job status tells you nothing about the pixels.
- Use the free tier for anything that isn't your product. It adds up fast: at 2 credits each, a year of daily blog art is not a rounding error.
