Instagram Reels is the platform where AI video is easiest to get technically right and hardest to get seen. The render is the simple part — 9:16, 15 seconds, done in a few minutes. The part that decides whether it works is everything after: the first second, the cadence, and the fact that Reels punishes you for posting the way TikTok rewards.
I publish to Reels every day across two brands, roughly two dozen posts a month per account. This is the setup I ended up with, the specs that matter, the mistakes that cost me the most reach, and where AI video genuinely has an edge on Reels over filming.
The specs that actually matter
Render at 1080x1920, 9:16, and stop worrying about anything above that. Reels re-encodes everything on upload, so a 4K master buys you nothing but upload time — I switched our pipeline down to 720p renders upscaled at the finishing stage and could not tell the difference in the feed.
Length is the real lever. Fifteen seconds is our default because it is the longest clip a single Seedance generation produces cleanly, and because completion rate matters more on Reels than watch time does. A 15-second clip watched twice beats a 40-second clip abandoned at 12.
The one spec people get wrong is the safe area. Instagram's interface eats the bottom of the frame — caption, audio strip, action buttons — and anything you need read has to sit clear of roughly the bottom 420 pixels of a 1080x1920 frame, and clear of about 180 pixels on the right. I burned an end card with a URL along the bottom for weeks before noticing nobody could see it.

Which generator, and why it is probably not the expensive one
For Reels the constraint is volume, not fidelity. A feed clip is watched on a phone, at speed, once. Paying premium per-second rates for a hero-quality render and then shipping three a week is the wrong trade against shipping three a day at a fraction of the cost.

The first second is the whole job
Reels gives you less patience than TikTok does. The scroll is faster, the audience is broader, and a slow cinematic build — the thing that looks best in a portfolio — is the thing that dies fastest in the feed.
What has worked for us is payoff-first: open on the result, then explain. Not "here is a workshop, here is a machine, here is what it makes" but the finished thing in frame at 0.0 seconds, with the how arriving second. Every clip we have made that led with atmosphere underperformed the one that led with the outcome.
The second thing is that the clip has to show the product or the result. Obvious, and still the most common failure — a beautifully rendered scene that demonstrates nothing. If a viewer cannot say what they just saw, the render quality is irrelevant.
Cadence, and the cap nobody tells you about
Three posts per account per day is our ceiling, and it is not an arbitrary number. Past three, the additional clips do not add reach — they divide it, and the earlier posts of the day visibly lose views. If you have a batch of nine finished clips, they go out over three days, not in one afternoon.
Spacing inside the day matters too. We schedule rather than publish directly, one post at a time, spread across the hours the account's own history says perform — not a generic best-times table from a blog post. Our slots sit around 10:00, 15:00 and 20:00 UTC and get re-decided on the account's recent numbers, not fixed.
Scheduling has a second benefit specific to AI content: Meta's API has no field for the AI label on organic posts, but the composer does. Queueing the post is what gives you somewhere to set it.

Label it, and stop worrying about the badge
Every AI clip we put on Reels carries the AI label. I expected a reach penalty and have not been able to find one — across two accounts and two dozen posts a month each, labelled clips sit in the same wide performance range as everything else, and hook quality moves the numbers far more than the badge does.
The caption line "AI-generated content" is not the label. It is worth keeping as a courtesy, but the real disclosure is the toggle in Meta's composer or provenance metadata embedded in the file, which Meta reads and acts on automatically.
What I would do on day one
Pick one account and one format. Render 9:16 at 1080x1920, cap at 15 seconds, keep everything readable out of the bottom 420 pixels. Use a cheap per-second model for volume. Lead with the payoff in the first frame and make sure the clip shows something. Post no more than three a day, scheduled and spaced, at times your own account history supports. Label every one.
Then change one variable at a time and let the numbers decide, because the honest position after a few hundred clips is that nobody can predict which one lands — you can only ship enough of them to find out. The UGC guide covers the format side if that is the shape you are after.
