The first thing to understand about D-ID pricing is that the number on the plan is not minutes. It is credits, and a credit is worth up to about fifteen seconds of finished video. Once you convert everything into seconds, the tier structure stops looking generous and starts looking like what it is: a licensing ladder with a bit of video attached.
I use talking-avatar tools regularly enough to have opinions about which ones are worth the money, and D-ID is one where the published price genuinely misleads people. So here is the arithmetic, done properly.
The plans, converted into video
D-ID's Studio tiers as listed at the time of writing — always confirm against D-ID's own pricing page, because avatar vendors reprice often and these figures come from published third-party breakdowns rather than an API response:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual (per month) | Credits | Roughly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lite | $5.90 | $4.70 | 40 | ~10 min |
| Pro | $29 | $16 | 60 | ~15 min |
| Advanced | $196 | $108 | 400 | ~100 min |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | — |
Now look at Lite to Pro. The price goes up roughly five times. The credits go up by twenty — from 40 to 60. That is a 50% increase in video for a 392% increase in price.
You are not buying minutes at that step. You are buying two other things: the removal of the watermark, and a commercial-use licence. Lite output carries D-ID branding and is restricted to personal projects. If the video is going anywhere near a client, an ad, or a monetised channel, Lite is not an option at any price — which makes the $5.90 tier a demo, not a plan.

Cost per minute, which is the number that matters
Working from the monthly prices and the fifteen-second credit:
- Lite: about $0.59 per minute — but unusable commercially.
- Pro: about $1.93 per minute. This is the real entry price for anything professional.
- Advanced: about $1.96 per minute. Essentially identical to Pro.
That last line is the useful one. Advanced does not make your video cheaper — it makes more of it available at the same rate, plus the support and controls a larger operation needs. There is no volume discount hiding at the top of this ladder. If your only problem is that you ran out of credits, upgrading buys you capacity at the same price per second you were already paying.
Annual billing is where the actual saving lives. Pro drops from $29 to $16 a month, which takes the effective rate to roughly $1.07 per minute — a genuine 45% cut, and a bigger lever than any tier change.
Where D-ID is worth it, honestly
D-ID's specialism is animating a still image into a speaking face. If that is your requirement — one photo, many videos, quick turnaround — it does the job with less setup than the studio-style platforms. It sits naturally alongside what I've written about AI talking photos and AI lip sync.
It is the wrong tool if you want a full presenter with body movement and gesture, where HeyGen and Synthesia are simply built for more. And it is the wrong tool if you want a scene rather than a face — that is a generative model's job, not an avatar platform's.
The failure mode I see most often is people buying an avatar subscription when what they actually wanted was image to video. Those are different products. An avatar tool makes a photo talk; an image-to-video model makes a photo move. Buying the wrong one is an expensive month.

How I'd choose
- Just trying it out. Use the trial. Do not pay for Lite expecting to publish anything — the watermark and the personal-use restriction make it a sandbox.
- Publishing commercially, low volume. Pro on annual billing. Fifteen minutes a month is genuinely tight, so measure your real usage for a month first.
- High volume. Advanced, but go in knowing the per-minute rate does not improve. Price it against HeyGen at the same volume before committing.
- Not sure you need an avatar at all. Try a free generator first and find out.
FAQ
Is D-ID free?
There is a trial with limited output, and trial exports carry a full-screen watermark. There is no permanent free commercial tier.
How long is one D-ID credit?
Up to roughly fifteen seconds of generated video. That is why 40 credits works out to about ten minutes rather than forty of anything.
Which D-ID plan allows commercial use?
Pro is the lowest tier that unlocks commercial use and removes the watermark. Lite is personal-projects only, whatever you are making.
Is Advanced better value than Pro?
Not per minute — both land near $1.95 a minute on monthly billing. Advanced buys capacity and higher-tier support, not a cheaper rate.
Is D-ID cheaper than HeyGen or Synthesia?
At the entry level, usually yes, because it does less. Once you need a full-body presenter, brand controls or team seats, compare it properly against the HeyGen and Synthesia numbers rather than on headline price.
Does annual billing save much?
More than changing tier does. Pro goes from $29 to $16 a month on annual, which is the single biggest saving available in this lineup.
